Your journey through the flames
can start with a fan ...
and end with a fanfare.

Dear SiZZlin' Sisters,
After 17 years of trying to deal with menopausal symptoms, and watching friends and family transition into this sea of mid-life without a paddle, it became clear to me that more real women websites were needed on the internet, ones with a more conversational tone, a sense of humor, accessible information, and "kitchen table" wisdom about womens' issues that has been swept under the rug for far too long.
My hot flashes began in my early forties, just as I was finishing up my MFA degree at American University in Washington, D.C.. In a literal panic, I quickly opted for hormone replacement therapy i.e pregnant mare's urine. What was I thinking? (and exactly how is that stuff collected?) After 15 years of HRT and a bilateral mastectomy, I now believe that some research on herbs and supplements, a stockpile of simple hand fans, some great teas, and a sense of humor would have been healthier, more reasonable alternatives.
Menopause is not a disease. It is a fairly predictable physical transition that has been shuttled off to the margins of medical research for too long. The mechanisms that lead to hot flashes and night sweats are not fully understood. So, until they are understood, FLashionables would like to suggest that everyone just relax, do what seems the least invasive and harmful, and have some fun with it. There are some helpful tips on this site, some healthy recipes, some light-hearted quality products, and a sincere attempt to make this journey a little easier and enjoyable.
Let's take the no out of menopause!
